Understanding Dental Emergencies

A dental emergency is any oral health issue that requires immediate attention to alleviate pain, stop bleeding, or save a tooth. Prompt treatment is crucial to prevent further complications and ensure the best possible outcome.

Common Dental Emergencies

Severe Toothache

A severe toothache can be debilitating. Here’s what you can do:

  • Gently rinse with warm water.
  • Use a piece of dental floss to remove any trapped food.
  • Manage swelling by holding a cold compress on the outside of your mouth.

Cracked or Broken Tooth

If you have a cracked or broken tooth:

  • If you can, save any pieces of the tooth.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Apply gauze to any bleeding areas for about 10 minutes or until the bleeding stops.
  • Use a cold compress to reduce swelling.
  • Book an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth requires the following immediate action:

  • Recover the tooth, holding it by the crown (the part you can see in the mouth).
  • Rinse the tooth root with water if dirty, but avoid scrubbing it or removing any attached tissue fragments.
  • Try to reinsert the tooth into its socket if possible.
  • If reinsertion isn’t possible, place the tooth in a small container of milk.
  • Promptly see your dentist to try and save the tooth.

Extruded (Partially Dislodged) Tooth

For a partially dislodged tooth:

  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth or cheek in the affected area.
  • Take pain relievers if necessary.
  • See your dentist immediately.

Dental Abscess

A dental abscess is a serious infection that can spread if not treated promptly. For an abscess:

  • Rinse your mouth several times a day to reduce pain.
  • Apply a cold compress to the affected area.
  • Take pain relievers.
  • See your dentist as soon as possible.
